SITZES

Noah & Ann Sitzes with children

L-R: Delia, Clara, Oda, Noah, Dessie, Ann, Dorothy, Linda

This is the trunk of the Sitzes family.  Grandma Lee (Delia Mae Lee) was born Delia Sitzes to Noah Franklin Sitzes and Lucretia Ann Huffman.  These two add surnames SITZES, MOYER, HUFFMAN, and YOUNT to the list.  The Sitzes trace their roots back to Capt Peter Seitz b 1755 in Lincoln County NC who was a pioneer of Madison County Missouri.  They are well documented through various DAR sources but are elusive due to the varied spelling of the name.  Many Sitzes are buried in Trace Creek Cemetery in Madison County.  One family plot shows three generations, each with a different spelling variation!  Great Grandpa Sitzes shows up in the 1910 census as Sitzer!  Try as I might, I have not found him in the 1900 census with his new wife and child.  The Sitzes kin of Madison County hold an annual reunion in Marquand the last weekend of September.

Grandpa Sitzes died on 22 Oct 1952 in Charleston so my memories of him are growing dim.  Two strong memories of him are his brass spitoon he kept by his chair in their living room, and his skill at peeling an apple with his pocket knife in one long single paring.

Although Grandpa died in 1952, his wife Ann lived to a ripe old age and was a familiar figure as I was growing up as she lived just a block from us in Charleston.  She brings us her Huffman and Yount heritage.  Both lines are pretty well documented.  The Younts are interesting as that line is the only one that uses that particular spelling variant.  George Calvert, and his nephew Henry S “Harry” Yount are two famous Younts that can be googled for lots of stories.  A few years ago I even met a Yount cousin who is a fellow squaredancer.
