Boy Cousins from 1926 Farmington Album of Emma Pottinger

Awhile back I ran across an old photo album of my grandmother Pottinger’s.  It was a small album, about 4″ x 5″ and unique in that it was fairly well labeled with at least some names.  After comparing names and ages with data in my family database I was able to come up with most of the names of the people in the photos.  They were all my grandfather Pottinger’s relatives, now long gone.  I’m not really sure where the pictures were taken but they appear to have been taken around the time that Amma Pottinger Blomeyer, her mother Mary Francis Barry, and her daughter Mary made  a visit to the old family farm northeast of Farmington MO.

This is from the 1926 album with the caption ‘boy cousins’. From top, left to righBoy Cousinst it’s Cornelius Clark White, Ed Blomeyer?, Fountain Pitts White, and Jesse Edgar White. The three White men are sons of Margaret Ann Barry and Jesse K White. If the 4th is Uncle Ed, he’s a cousin by way of his marriage to Aunt Amma Pottinger. He’d be a cousin-in-law to the Whites, and brother-in-law to Grandpa P. Margaret is the older sister of Mary Francis Barry. Bottom L to R is Lum Whitener?, Claudius Eli?, and Hardy Barry Pottinger. William Henry Pottinger was a cousin but apparently not in this picture. Claudius Eli was also a son of Margaret Barry White and a 1st cousin of Grandpa P. Lum Whitener’s kids were in the group and he’s another cousin-in-law like Uncle Ed. Claudius Eli also shows up without a caption in the Whites photo of this sameChildren's photo album. He’s the one with a cigar in his left hand in both photos and a striped tie on.

Children photo in 1926 Album

This photo was captioned Mary J., Mary Linwood, Frances, and Dorothy with Hardy and James.  Dad is on right, Uncle Jim on left.  Mary J is most likely Mary J Sherwood, Pearl Barry Sherwood’s daughter.  Top right is most likely Mary Linwood Blomeyer, daughter of Amma (Pottinger) Blomeyer.  The other two in the middle are most likely Dorothy (L) and Frances (R) Whitener, Lum and Francis (White) Whitener’s daughters.

Original Barry’s

From Left to Right, top row: James Sidney Barry (75), Bob (66), bottom: Josephine (80), Mary Frances Original Barrys(72), and Rose (63).  There were six ‘old Barrys’ alive in 1926: these five and John Albert Barry who lived in KY.  He was 77 at the time and may not have been able or willing to travel.  The Barry’s settled in Bird’s Point MO,  Bird’s Point was settled by Abraham Bird who received a land grand from Don De Lassus dated 1789.  By 1895 it was a thriving village.  The Barrys settled there between 1854 and 1858 from Rusk Co. Texas.  Rose was the teacher at Bird’s Point school in 1901 according to the History of Mississippi County by Betty Powell, 1977 p 196.  She was also a member of the Culture Club in 1910 (p265).

Whites

WhitesI’m not sure who the guy is on the left but from knowing the Jesse and Margaret White family the others are from top left to right: Claudius Eli, Cornelius Clark, F. Pitts, and Jesse Edgar.  Bottom L to R are, I’m assuming, their wives Frances, Alice, Carrie, and Ollie May.  Edgar had just remarried in 1924 and Ollie May may have been younger than the others.

Sons of Pitts, Fannie, Amma, and Hardy

Sons of Pitts etcTop L to R is: John, Sanford, and Leroy, bottom L to R is: Earl, Jim, Noland, Hardy II, and Ed.  John and Leroy are sons of Fannie and Lum Whitener.  Sanford and Noland are sons of Pitts and Carrie White.  Ed and Earl are Aunt Amma’s boys, and of course Jim and Hardy are Hardy and Emma Pottinger’s boys.  Sanford apparently died later in 1926 after this picture was made.

Girl Cousins

Girl CousinsThis is a bit more challenging than the others so I will number them top L to R as 1 through 6, and 7 through 10 left to right across the bottom.  No. 1 is the girl identified earlier as Mary Frances Langston but she’s a niece!  No. 3 is Carrie White,  No. 4 is Alice White.  No. 8 appears to be Emma Pottinger.  No. 9 is Ollie May White.  No 7 is Frances White, Claudius’s wife.  I’m guessing that No. 2 is Mrs. Lum Whitener (Francis White) and that the three on the right (Nos 5, 6, and 10), particularly 10 and the girl who has her hands on her shoulders, are the Benham girls, Celeste (#5), Ethel (#6), and Pearl (#10).  Number 1 must be Mary J. Sherwood, Pearl’s daughter.  She is a first cousin once removed.  Including wives of cousins with cousins, I count only 10 possibles and Bob White’s wife was most likely not present.
